The full 32 bit exit code is only available with the waitid call, but not with older wait interfaces. With older wait interfaces, the visible exit code only contains the low 8 bits of the exit code. Shell scripts typically execute commands and capture their exit statuses. For the shell’s purposes, a command which exits with a zero exit status has succeeded. A nonzero exit status indicates.
Out of range exit values can result in unexpected exit codes. An exit value greater than 255 returns an exit code modulo 256. For example, exit 3809 gives an exit code of 225 (3809 % 256 = 225).

When a script ends with an exit that has no parameter, the exit status of the script is the exit status of the last command executed in the script (previous to the exit).
